They say music is the universal language and the food of love, and what better way to express one’s joy, faith, and devotion than through song? Gospel music may have originated as hymns of praise and worship during religious gatherings, but it has increasingly grown into an independent form of music, with a lot of recognized artists specializing in this field.
Gospel music is said to have its origins in the South, all the way back in the days of slavery. The blacks often faced punishment if they offended their white masters and weren’t even permitted to do many things. So they took refuge in their faith and their songs clearly ex pressed their beliefs and their certainty that they will be delivered from their suffering. But this field of music isn’t just restricted to the experiences of the slaves however. Even predominantly white groups performed their own gospel music, and to this day, there is still a distinct difference between the two styles.
Modern gospel music got its start in the 1930s when Thomas Dorsey, considered the ‘Father of Contemporary Gospel Music’, created songs of praise that were much more exuberant than the usual solemn church hymns. Gospel music took flight when more artists singing in this style came out, further paving the way for the development of this musical style.
Today, gospel music is performed all over the world, with various artists gaining popularity and a generous fanbase. The styles may vary from artist to artist, but the fact remains that gospel music is still an enthusiastic expression of faith, and will continue to enjoy support throughout the world.
